Through 8 January 2023
New York City
The Museum of Art and Design presents Chris Schanck: Off-World. The artist’s first retrospective holds a vast whimsical portfolio that challenges traditional forms, themes and color palettes typically lent to furniture. Inspired by the world around us, outer space, ancient past and underwater—Schanck transforms the gallery into a contemporary meeting ground for sculpture, storytelling and refined material experimentation. Off-world comes from a science fiction term used in the 1950s, meaning something that isn’t native to earth, a perfect way to describe Schanck’s work.
The exhibition is on view through January 8, 2023 complemented by a series of studio workshops offered from March 6th to March 31st, 2022. The programming invites youth, ages 5 and up to come create home furnishings with foam and upcycled materials inspired by the exhibition.
