#FridayFive with Shillington Design Teacher Andy Judd

Inspiration can come from anywhere. So, on the first Friday of each month, we’re sharing some of our Shillington team’s favourite things from the past four weeks. This month, Shillington London Head of Teaching Andy Judd tells us what was on his radar in August.

1. To Follow: Patrick Thomas

Patrick Thomas is a designer, graphic artist and design professor. He has two silkscreen presses in London and Berlin, living and predominantly worked in the latter. His Instagram acts as his visual diary showcasing his design work, his screenprints, exhibitions and so much more—it is an absolute treat for the eyes and a constant source of inspiration. His other Instagram account which documents Berlin street graphics is also well worth a follow.

2. To Read: Nick Cave: Mercy on Me by Reinhard Kleist

You’ve heard the music, now buy the graphic novel! This awesome comic by award-winning graphic novelist Reinhard Kleist uses characters and stories from Nick Cave‘s songs to tell the Australian musician’s story—from his childhood in Australia to his time with The Bad Seeds and all the highs and lows in between. One hell of a story!

3. To Go: Smoke and Mirrors: The Psychology of Magic

Prepare to be amazed… the Wellcome Collection‘s exhibition ‘Smoke and Mirrors’ brings magic to life. It attempts to explain how magic works (without giving away the secrets), and how the human psyche can be tricked. There’s also some artefacts from the history of magic on show—and some amazing design inspiration in the form of old magic tour posters.

4. To Listen: Anima by Thom Yorke

Radiohead singer Thom Yorke‘s third solo album Anima is a journey through dystopia and the anxiety he suffered before writing the album—it was developed through live performances and studio work and the whole album is brilliant. For an added bonus, it was released alongside a short film directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, of Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood and Phantom Thread fame, on Netflix.

5. Wildcard: Alan Berry Rhys

Alan Berry Rhys is a illustrator and graphic designer who lives and works in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His work is influenced by vintage graphic advertising, and is based on the low quality printing methods of it—using its limitations and errors to create beautiful work. His colours, lettering and style makes you feel like you’re on the beach in Buenos Aires—there’s nothing I want on my wall at home more.
