Inspiration can come from anywhere. So, on the first Friday of each month, we’re sharing some of our Shillington team’s favourite things from the past four weeks. This month, Shillington Australia Experience Manager Ella Shillington tells us what was on her radar in December.

1. To Follow: Ruby Mary Lennox

Ruby Barber, aka Ruby Mary Lennox, is a Berlin-based Australian flower stylist/artist who’s work is magnificent. Ruby’s recent collaboration with the New York Times and Hermes blew me away. I love how she has uses common weeds as her focal point in her installation and takes what we consider traditional floristry to a whole new level.

2. To Read: Boy Swallows Universe by Trent Dalton

“Do your time before it does you.”

I absolutely loved reading Boy Swallows Universe by Trent Dalton last year. The novel follows the epic journey of two young brothers growing up in Brisbane’s violent suburbs in the 80s. I loved reading about the bonds between the unlikely characters—it was so engaging, profound, complex and moving.

3. To Go: Mona Foma

If you’re looking for something quirky and different, the Mona is hosting a it’s annual summer festival this January, Mona Foma.

Mona Foma’s festival hub includes performances and parties that highlight music, culture, cinema and art with an emphasis on the strange and interesting. Definitely worth the trip down to Tasmania!

4. To Listen: NPR Tiny Desk Concerts

NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts are series of live sets filmed at the desk of Bob Boilen, the host of All Songs Considered. There’s something for everyone—from English punk band Idles to pop singer Carly Rae Jepsen and singer/rapper Anderson Paak—and every performer puts their own spin on the restrictive space. Watch them at your own risk—you’ll definitely end up in Youtube wormhole!

5. Wildcard: Cornelia Parker at MCA

Part of the 2019/2020 Sydney International Art Series, British artist Cornelia Parker brings her incredible work to the city. The exhibition features Parker’s installations, sculpture and other works, including the amazing Cold Dark Matter: An Exploded View—a garden shed exploded by the British Army (at the request of the artist!). A brilliant insight into one of the most important women artists working today.
