Rebecca Colefax Photography-Cass Deller-33

Shillington graduate Cass Deller is a designer and artist who specialises in abstract watercolour, illustrations, textile design, and unique hand lettering. Fresh off stunning collaborations with Bespoke Letterpress and Postcard Swimwear, there’s no telling where else her talents will take her! We caught up with Cass to hear about her recent projects, how Shillington helped her launch her own business, and most importantly, her passion for design.

After Shillington you went out as a freelancer, and have now made the transition to running your own business. Tell us about Cass Deller Design!

Yes, I started Cass Deller Design about three months after graduating from Shillington! It was a nerve-racking time, however I just knew it was the right decision for me. At the same time, I was lucky enough to be offered a contract design role with Bespoke Letterpress, which allowed me to grow my client base on the side. Month by month, by client base grew, to a point where I could hand pick my projects, and ensure I was building the right brand for Cass Deller Design.

What do you love about being a designer?

For me, I love doing what I am truly passionate about.

Working with and surrounding myself with creative, positive people who encourage me, believe in me, and make me want to be a better designer everyday.

I honestly feel so blessed to be able to design every day, and call it my job!

You specialise in abstract watercolour, illustrations and hand lettering, how did studying design influence your approach to this?

Before I studied Graphic Design at Shillington, I was a Retail Interior Designer. I’ve always been creative, and loved painting and drawing, however I never had the skills to transform my art into digital pieces until I studied Graphic Design. Learning the tools of Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator has opened my world up to infinite possibilities, and that’s really exciting for my work, and for my clients. I feel like any visions can now become a reality because I have the skills to not only create the illustrations and lettering, I can also digitally transform them into anything I desire.

Out of all the projects you’ve worked on, is there one you’re particularly proud of?

I’d have to say I’m most proud of my collaboration with Postcard Swimwear and the amazing bikinis we produced from my watercolour illustrations. I have always wanted to explore textile design, and this has just given me a taste for the industry. Since this collaboration I have attracted a lot of interest from the Interiors industry, and have produced many textile designs for my clients including a cushion range, a fashion range, and most recently a wallpaper range with The Paper Merchants.

Who knows? There might be a Cass Deller Interior Design range in the future.

Big thanks to Cass for taking the time to speak with us! Be sure to check out Cass Deller Design to see more of her bright and beautiful work.
