Bianca Oggiano graduated from the full-time course at #shillobri in December. She traveled from Milan to study with us before returning home to Italy. We caught up with Bianca just before she left to hear how she found the whole Shillington experience. She told us how thrilling it was to brand a city she’d never been to and why passion is the key to success!
What were you up to before Shillington?
Before Shillington I had just finished my Masters in Interior Architecture at Politecnico of Milan.
Why did you take the plunge and decide to enrol?
I decided to enrol because I’ve always preferred Graphic Design to Architecture, and I wanted to finish my academic path. Shillington looked perfect to me, it only lasted a short amount of time but by looking at previous student work,
I was confident that it was possible to achieve an outcome of a very high standard.
You traveled from your home in Milan to study in Brisbane. How has life been in Australia?
I’ve found life in Australia great, thanks to friendly people and a lively city. From an academic perspective, I’ve really appreciated the practical approach in teaching and the close relationship that forms between student and teacher on the course.
What was your favourite brief during the course? Why?
My favourite brief was the City Branding. I enjoyed extensively researching the chosen city as I’d never been there before in person. I liked discovering its key features which ultimately enabled me to develop a big roll out!
What was your biggest challenge during the course? Why?
My biggest challenge was learning to manage my time wisely during portfolio time. It was very stressful, but a good experience to prepare me for work in the real world!
What would you say to someone who is sceptical about the Shillington course?
I’d say that Graphic Design is a very practical discipline, and three months is enough to achieve a good knowledge of the basics and to develop good taste—the rest I guess will come with experience, passion and constant research.
If you could give one piece of advice to someone starting at Shillington, what would it be?
It might sound banal, but all you need to get through this course is to be very passionate about graphic design. Research continuously via books, magazines and Pinterest. Also try to get feedback from your classmates throughout the course, getting different points of view helps you learn and grow.
Thanks so much to Bianca for sharing her story and portfolio! You can check out more of Bianca’s work over on her website.
