Studio Moross—the go to source for powerful visuals, wacky illustration and energetic design. With a client list featuring some of the world’s top music acts such as One Direction and Sam Smith, they’re absolutely killing it. Both Shillington staff and students are huge fans of the eclectic agency, so we were elated to welcome Guy Fielding and Charlie Patterson in for a talk at our London campus.
During the talk Charlie and Guy took us through a few integral Studio Moross projects—enlightening us with stories of tricky clients, looming deadlines and the unparalleled feeling of pride when presented with the final result.
Eager to learn more about Studio Moross we followed up the talk with a few questions for Charlie and Guy which they kindly answered below. Make sure to watch the animation they’ve recently completed for Manchester Music Festival, Parklife.
Your work is so full of energy and excitement. With a long list of enviable clients, has there been a favourite project you’ve worked on during your time at Studio Moross so far?
CP: Personally I have two favourites which are very different. One is working for One Direction throughout 2015, this mainly because of how broad the work became, from doing the stage design for the entire tour to the visuals and the whole album campaign. It was a massive project to be involved in and was amazing to see the show when it came to London. The other was a completely new band named Miamigo, for this we had a lot of freedom for the logo and art direction and not a massive budget so we ended up doing a really fun shoot with the two guys in the studio. The result was a super DIY visualiser and press shots that were just quite enjoyable to make.
GF: For me it has to be the festivals—Wild Life and Parklife—bonkers artwork with loads of drawings, characters and colours. It gets such a good reaction and are really fun designs, loads to look at and play with, which is helpful given how many ads we have to make from the initial posters! Also, it’s always good to get some free festival tickets from the client as a thank you ????
Lots of our students sight Studio Moross as their dream place to work—what are the top qualities you look for when hiring a junior designer or intern?
CP: From an initial application we probably look for something different in their work, it is great when someone special comes along that can bring a new exciting skill to the studio.
The other main quality is their personality, someone positive, confident and fun would never be turned away.
GF: Agreed, them just being a sound person is important, you have to sit together and question each other’s work and collaborate so it’s important everyone gets along. Also strong image making—we’re not such a conceptual or traditional design studio, we work with a broad range of styles and often focus on purely visuals. For this reason it’s important for the designer to be able to work in a variety of medium and methods, as well as quickly!
Is there any advice you could give for our graduates about to enter the design industry?
CP: Do whatever you want to do, the longer you think about doing something the less likely you are to do it.
GF: Be really on it, check the jobs boards every morning, contact studios you like, designers, any possible connections, recruiters even—at entry level you’ve got nothing to lose so go for it.
Massive thanks to Studio Moross for visiting the #shillolon campus and answering our follow up questions—we hope to have them in for another visit in the near future. If you’re eager to learn more about Studio Moross, catch up with them on Twitter.
