3 Reasons All Design Students Should Learn Sketch

Here at Shillington, we work hard keep up with the fast-paced design industry so our students are best equipped to land top design jobs. To enhance our digital design curriculum, we recently introduced Sketch—a dynamic and easy-to-use tool for designing websites and apps. And now we don’t know how we ever lived without it!

As a design student, your whole world revolves around learning new things. Everything is new, everything is exciting, everything is an opportunity. Actually now that I think of it—as a practicing designer you’re still learning new things all the time. FOREVER!

Okay, now take a deep breath. This is actually a good thing because who wants to have a career without challenge?

Only a few short years ago a designers tool belt mostly consisted of Adobe Creative Suite. Jump to 2017 and we have a whole new set of Apps to choose from.

Sketch was one of the first cabs off the rank to take on Adobe, but rather than trying to do everything, they focused in on user interface design as their primary focus and this has served them well.

Here’s why we believe every design student should learn Sketch:

Sketch is relevant

Firstly, we could see that industry was moving away from Photoshop for digital projects towards applications like Sketch.  It’s also a quicker process to iterate over ideas in a project. It seemed like a no-brainer to move over and teach our students the best possible tools.

Sketch is predictable

Tools like Sketch, Adobe XD or Figma work in a similar way and follow similar patterns. This is great because it means that once you’ve learnt one, having to get your head around any of the others is a piece of cake.  

Sketch is focused

Sketch’s laser focus on digital design is quite freeing as it limits your options so you can focus on the task at hand. Unlike Photoshop where the sky is the limit, Sketch keeps things simple.
