Meet the Winner of our Universal Type Shillumni Competition

We’re delighted to announce the winner of our recent Universal Type Shillumni Competition! We asked our talented graduate network to design a type lock-up in a language of their choice using the statement, ‘Design is a Universal Language’. Upon receiving a multitude of incredible entries we chose Anastasiia Vinnichenko as our winner!

The Shillington Manchester graduate is a Russian native and since completing the course in December 2017 is now working as a designer at Tile Creative in Manchester.

Anastasiia explained the concept behind her design;

“Inspired by the old Russian type of Cyrillic ornate lettering (called Vyaz) which was widely used in the 14-19 century. The actual look of these letterforms was more important than readability.

Every book handwritten in Vyaz had a sense of craft to it and was considered as a true masterpiece.

I decided to use variant baselines and decorative swirls to create a sense of development and playfulness. Colour palette represents precision and expertise of Russian scribes.”

Be sure to check out more of Anastasiia’s design work on her website and follow her on Instagram and Twitter for regular updates. Huge thanks to all our amazing graduates who entered this competition, keep a look out for further Shillumni news on the Facebook Group
