A big concern of mine was: Will I really learn that much? Will I really be able to do this? Will my portfolio be any good? The short answer: Yes. If you put in the work in class, whether full or part time, if you utilize the tools you’re surrounded by, the teachers, advice of those who come in for industry talks, etc. you can create a portfolio that is up to par with your peers, both in Shillington or coming out of other design courses.
The course is structured, yes, for you to learn but also to completely prepare you for life in the real life design world, which sometimes IS stressful and IS tiring and IS full on.

Don’t be afraid. Embrace not knowing anything and starting from scratch—you may be surprised by your own creativity and if you’re open and willing you will learn all you need to get you started.
Without seeming cliched, I am writing this on my lunch break of my dream job.
Do yourself a favour and sign up, you won’t regret it. Without wanting to seem gushing, it was the best decision I’ve ever made.

Best professional decision I ever made. Far and away the best quality teaching of graphic design I have encountered. My tutors had a wonderful dynamic, both consummate professionals, extremely skilled designers.
There’s no fluff in the curriculum, just excellent content. I got a beautiful book out of it at the end as well as an invaluable improved skill set.

3 months at Shillington College has changed my life. From the moment you walk in the door, the tutors help you to see the world with design-goggles on and you’ll never take them off again!
Yes, it’s a lot of money, but it is 100% worth it if you’re serious about wanting to become a designer or would like to have the technical skills and critical thinking to integrate into other practices.
Every single tutor has an amazing generosity of spirit, you know that they are wanting you to do really well and they will support you to be the best you can be. I cannot recommend this course highly enough.

I considered going back to university to study Graphic Design, but after hearing countless people tell me that the courses you can enroll on at most universities are bloated and teach you a lot of unnecessary information, I looked for something more succinct.
I would recommend this course to anyone who is passionate about design and determined to make a career of it. I wouldn’t take my time at Shillington college back for a thing. If anything, I wish I could be back there again!
The course is jam-packed full of useful content, and by the end, not only do you have a full portfolio to go job hunting with, but a design bible of handouts reminding you of everything you were taught in your time.
The course content was focussed around the practical and teaching principles of design, through example based learning. The approach of coursework was in the reality of the creative world—start with a brief, hand-drawn ideation, digital concepts creation, refine design candidates, identify and complete final design. The last point I would make is the open critique of design work in the class. Print everything, put it on the wall and listen to constructive criticism as well as positive reinforcement from your peers. This really assists when out in the big bad world.
Every day at work when I discuss design, I draw on what I was taught at Shillington.

The full-time Shillington course is like signing up for NASA’s design school. If NASA were a design school. Point is: the quality of the teaching and resources are world-class and you kinda feel like you are exploring new galaxies within your brain as your teachers guide you to “push the design further” and you catapult into wonderful new worlds of design creative. The atmosphere in class is friendly but intense. Intense because practically from the moment you start class you are designing to real-world briefs, within real-world deadlines. While learning technical and conceptual skills. At the same time. YEAH.
It’s hardcore to begin with but you feel like a goddamn graphic design ninja by the end of it.
And the teachers won’t let you slouch back and faff about in class either. And finally, to finish off with my NASA metaphor here: it’s a thrilling ride. You’ll make close lifelong friendships with other classmates and by the end of portfolio week, trust me, you’ll be feeling on top of the world.

The 30+ class projects (covering print, web, and mobile) completed over the course of the program replicate real-life studio projects where a brief is given and students must work against a tight timeline (much like it is in the “real world”.).
Overall, Shillington is an amazing design program but I would caveat that it really is what you put into it. If you enter the program with the goal of learning design and creating a great portfolio then you will definitely succeed at that.

I went here for the part-time course during 2012-13. I found a full-time job within 3 months of graduating as a designer for an entertainment company. If you’re looking for a career change, and something where you can work while studying, Shillington will prepare you for the real world as you learn about many different kinds of graphic design and get to do projects that you would do in your actual job as a designer. I would recommend Shillington to anyone and always sing their praises to anyone who asks about my time there.
Teachers who care, teachers who are actually working in their field, curriculum that is relevant to what’s happening in the world of graphic design right now. 5 stars!

I was considering a few other options in the city that carried the prestige of a University but along with it, the hefty price tag and 2-4 year commitment. I was anxious to work hard and get out there into the design world armed with a strong process, conceptual confidence and the technical tools to succeed.
Shillington’s part-time program fit perfectly into my life by allowing me the time to still work and intern at an agency.
The instructors were amazing throughout the course and continuously encouraged me to keep developing a broad range of styles. By the end of the program I not only had a strong working knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, I also had a comprehensive portfolio of work that I was proud and excited to present; ultimately helping me land a designer position at a leading digital agency.

After graduating with my Bachelor’s Degree and working in a dead-end non-creative job, I knew I needed a change. I found Shillington online and it looked like the perfect fit. I ended up signing up for the part-time course and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. My teachers were amazing—both worked in the field and were so knowledgable. Since the classes were small, I got an unbelievable amount of one-on-one time in order to perfect the designs that I put into my portfolio.
It feels so good to be passionate about the work you’re doing, and Shillington taught me all that I needed to go in order to go out into the field with confidence.

Our teachers drilled us in the basics of every program and taught us how to use them most efficiently. Even though I had taught myself how to use Photoshop in high school and learned InDesign/Illustrator at uni, I found myself ‘unlearning’ a lot of my old bad habits and learning better, quicker ways to work with the programs.
I was amazed at how much I learned that my uni course just didn’t cover.
Wow, this probably sounds like a paid ad. I just really enjoyed my experience at Shillington.
